It is evident that the military has always been dominant in Turkish politics given the fact that it is one of the founding-if not the core- components of the new republic. As a result, the military did not hesitate to intervene in politics since the establishment of the republic in 1923. However, the February 28, 1997 stands out as it was the first military intervention that was pursued as a process by 'post-modern' methods. This book analyzes not only the previous patterns of the military coups in Turkey, but also the new framework of the civil military relations in Turkey while elaborating on the impact of the European Union membership process on democratization in the country until 2006.
