The historical building stock and seismic risk draw considerable attention of the engineers for studying the earthquake performance of these structures and investigating appropriate protection techniques. The analysis of these structures poses important challenges because of the complexity of their geometry, the variability of the properties of the construction material, difficulty of the experimental survey, use of different building techniques, and the lack of the knowledge on the existing damage sources. Furthermore the structure s cultural value and desire to preserve it for the future generations demand a high level of protection against any possible earthquakes.
