VDM Cingi Celal: Mold-Metal Reactions in Magnesium Investment Ca

Use of magnesium in industry, particularly in automobile industry is consistently increasing. All known casting processes including investment casting can be used for production of magnesium castings. Magnesium, however, reacts practically with all investment casting refractories, from which molds are made of. The research work was carried out a) to investigate the degree of reactions between the various refractory materials and the magnesium alloy AZ91E; b)to find new techniques to reduce these reactions and c)to provide a better understanding of the mold-metal reactions in magnesium investment casting Fused alumina,fused silica, molochite,zircon, yttria, zirconia and fused magnesia were the studied ceramics. Results of the experiments are discussed and conclusions are drawn on the relative reaction tendency of studied refractories and other factors affecting the mold-metal reactions.
